Great news, the Happy Talk Bilum commissioned by Happy Talk for Art & About Sydney in 2011 has been selected for Plumes and pearlshells, art of the New Guinea highlands that opens at the AGNSW in May this year.

The 10-metre long hanging bilum was created by internationally respected Bilum artist Florence Kamel and 10 weavers from Goroka – Alice Lucas, Freda Buko, Julie Danny, Jollan Kelaimo, Rolan Dick, Daisy Raymond, Julie Pilo, Jenny Tiku, Nancy Apae and Hella Bikukure. Defined by the vibrant colours of a Garoka sunset, the bilum represents a new direction for Pacific weaving traditions. Woven in just under eight weeks, to date it is the largest Bilum the group has ever made.

Plumes and pearlshells, art of the New Guinea highlands 30 May – 10 August, 2014. Florence Kamel will be holding Bilum-making workshops on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 May. Visit the AGNSW for all the details.
